Become a global player in the creative industry

By Wout Arets

Introduction

Hi! I'm Wout and since December 2014 I'm working as a freelance creative. My goal is to become a global player in the creative industry. I would love to work with people who inspire me and work on sexy projects I believe in. Slowly starting and building my own shop is always in the back of my mind. In this list you'll find articles that help me along the way. It's about defining the industry, starting projects, making ideas reality and working more productive and efficient. And who knows what I think is useful. Last thing to mention is that I believe it's very important never copy a thought, way of working, model or process etc lined out in one of the articles. Always look what specific points you think are good and which aren't and build your own from there. Enjoy!

Added by Wout Arets: “I truly believe in starting a lot of ideas and see if they work along the way. People wanna work with creatives who can come up with ideas but even more with creatives who make them happen as well! This blogpost I wrote after doing a fun and succes full project with two friends of mine. It's about our process, from start to where we finished.

1 How to translate a simple idea into a succes — Medium

How we made more than 1000 people in Holland super happy with a simple idea. A cliché beginning How cliché can it be: it all started in a bar. Three Dutch creatives wanted to do a small project together for learning new stuff, build portfolio but most of all: have fun. And yeah, a little bit showing the traditional creative

Added by Wout Arets: “Creativity is not always about being innovative or developing something new. It's as well about seeing new chances and opportunities for already existing products or services. In this post Boris shares his frustration about services that suck in 2015 and actually aren't ready for 2014. He's right. I recognised his frustrations and want to help companies and brand make their stuff better and more useful in stead of making something new which doesn't make sense or doesn't work.

2 let's do better in 2015 shall we?

This morning I tried to upgrade a flight I have booked for next week. I opened the iPad app from the airline I'm flying with and tried to find my flight. It has a button that allows me to pick a chair. I click it and the in-app browser starts. I'm logged into the app, but the in-app browser window

Added by Wout Arets: “How to get the maximum out of your day? A productive daily schedule. This article has some great tips about setting up your day. Now sticking to it :)

3 Here's The Schedule Very Successful People Follow Every Day

All too often, productivity tips are a dime a dozen. Some even conflict with each other. What we need is a system. What schedule do the pros use? What system does science say allows us to be most productive? What's key is feeling in control and making sure your energy levels are matched to the importance of the task at

Added by Wout Arets: “One of the most creative and succes full minds walking on our planet at this moment. Everything he touches transforms into gold. A pretty long read full with nice quotes and tips about books and music. Thank you Mister Williams!

4 Get Busy: Pharrell's Productivity Secrets

Pharrell Williams is on a high. "Whew! Whew!" he says. "Listen to me, it is crazy." The 40-year-old musician, producer, and mini mogul is seated on a rolling chair in the tranquil recording studio at the top of Miami's Setai Hotel; he's small and delicate, like an Egyptian cat, with ropes of delicate gold necklaces and bracelets encircling his neck

Added by Wout Arets: “Writing is key! I studied Dutch Culture and Languages at the University. In my first years I had to write and read a lot. But really a lot. Till this day the skill I developed benefits me in my work. In debriefing, in briefing, in writing decks, in writing cases, in writing blogposts even in writing love letters! Get the picture we have to write a lot. I love blogging and think it's a great way to show the way you work. Since 2015 I try to limit my blogposts to max of 300 - 500 words. A readers time isn't endless and you need to get your message across. This article gives some general tips on becoming a better writer. Now read and then start writing. Maybe drop me a mail at woutarets@gmail.com?

5 Follow These 5 Steps to Become an Effective Writer

I used to spend too much time on writing. Sometimes it took me a whole day to write a post of only 500 words. When I look back on these days of toil, I realize the actual writing had only cost me around an hour. The other hours were devoted to staring at the screen and relentlessly editing the article.

Added by Wout Arets: “Hello there. Hope you're enjoying the reading list. I've remarked there is no overseeing structure in the list and I'm not sure if that will come. Probably it's needed because you don't become a global player in the creative industry by following steps from A-Z. Anyway. This article is very nice. First of all because it's written by Ben Malbon - @Malbonnington. He has a dream job at Google and I follow him for quite some time on Twitter. He definitely knows what is happening in the industry and has his own take on it. This blog is a summary about an event he organised and where the top notch of New Yorks's creative industry is discussing the structure within agencies.

6 The New Agency Operating System – Think with Google

It's doubtful whether there's ever been a more tumultuous time to be in advertising. Change is no longer a phase but a constant. The number of canvasses for creativity has exponentially increased, and the pace of just about everything continues to accelerate. While full of opportunity, this world can be confusing to navigate, for all of us. A few weeks

Added by Wout Arets: “Team is everything. Even when I'm working as a freelancer I always try to work with a team! As individual you can have an idea but with a team you can bring it to new levels. Three tips about working in teams are lined out in this post.

7 The Key Habit Of Highly Effective Teams

In Silicon Valley, where I work, teams are obsessed with crossing the divide between having great dreams and actually achieving them. It's the difference between world-shaking impact and dreaded obscurity. I've personally been on teams that have experienced both, and I've observed many more in action. I've learned teams that achieve great things share one key habit-they are committed to

Added by Wout Arets: “This article shows tips and tricks around creativity. Five books are highlighted which you can decide on to read yes or no. Some stuff you've probably read before. But there's also new stuff. Always good to keep things on repeat once and a while.

8 How To Transform Your Problem-Solving And Creativity

Think of all the people you know who inspire you, whether family and friends or public figures. Who are the most interesting, engaging and stimulating to be around? The ones with the great ideas and energy for life? These people almost certainly always ask questions and have an insatiable thirst to learn new things. According to Donald N. MacKinnon, who

Added by Wout Arets: “Sometimes you get an email from a friend with as subject: read this Wout. This article was in an email with that headline. I never heard of the writer of this blogpost but after going through his blogposts he seems to be a guy knowing what he's doing. A new agency model is outlined in this blogpost. A lot of stuff makes sense and totally agrees on my own thoughts as well. Biggest insights: On-demand insights and ideas for companies that want to become fast companies. No retainers – just products with fixed prices No pitches – just products available for purchase No conflicts of interest Just insight and idea products that happen in ten-day sprints And a great user experience! I'm gonna post of User Experience in the next one.

9 A New Agency Model – Solving Slowth Life. Then strategy

Added by Wout Arets: “Remember that great article from Google's Firestarters in New York. Well here's a new one. Again Ben Malbon invited some top notch people from the industry on stage to discuss working with constraints in our industry. "Creative work increasingly requires more with less. Instead of resisting limitations, what if we put them to good use for our agencies and clients?" The book mentioned in the article: A Beautiful Constraint: How To Transform Your Limitations Into Advantages, and Why It's Everyone's Business seems very promising as well.

10 Firestarters in NYC – Think with Google

Constraints and limitations are all around us: the need to be in more channels with the same budgets, the finite number of the most talented people, the little time we have to execute. The pressure is relentless: get more done with fewer resources in less time. It is often the constraints, not the freedoms, that define the work we do

Added by Wout Arets: “A shorter read, but definitely useful. I always want to learn more and improve myself. Showing this to people you work with can be an inspiration. Because you want them to keep on learning and improving as well.

11 How Bosses Can Encourage Transparency In The Workplace

Professional development conversations are an important part of any company culture, but how do you create an environment where everyone is eager to engage in these high-value conversations? There are a few things to keep in mind as you encourage all levels and positions to participate in a transparent manner: The professional development goals of supervisors must be known by
