Added by Tanner Christensen: “How do we define creativity from a scientific perspective? Neurologist Joel Chan attempts an answer. "The science of creativity is arguably still in its infancy, despite there being volumes of research on it since the 1950's, in part due to the strong presence of folk psychology, and the difficulty in wrangling it scientifically. 1 How would you define creativity?

Added by Tanner Christensen: “Whether you think you're creative or not, you're right. "However, there are quite a few people in the world today who believe that they’re not creative, that they simply cannot think creatively, and that no matter what they do they’ll forever be a straight-shooting analytical thinker. 4 The Science of "Chunking," Working Memory, and How Pattern Recognition Fuels Creativity

by Maria Popova "Generating interesting connections between disparate subjects is what makes art so fascinating to create and to view... We are forced to contemplate a new, higher pattern that binds lower ones together." It seems to be the season for fascinating meditations on consciousness, exploring such questions as what happens while we sleep, how complex cognition evolved, and why

Added by Tanner Christensen: “Have you ever noticed that you're more creative at a certain time of the day? Typically that time is night. So what's going on exactly that makes us feel more creative just before bed?

5 Why you're more creative at night and how to reproduce the effect

Why you're more creative at night and how to reproduce the effect If you find yourself feeling a bit more creative at night when you're tired, you can thank your circadian rhythm. There's a lot more to it than that, but let's start there, with your sleep/awake cycle. Due to cultural norms: the majority of us follow a routine that

Added by Tanner Christensen: “A recent, June 2013 study from the School of Psychology at University of New South Wales by Joseph P. Forgas reports that negative moods can "improve memory performance, reduce judgmental errors, improve motivation, and result in more effective interpersonal strategies."

6 Don't Worry, Be Sad! On the Cognitive, Motivational, and Interpersonal Benefits of Negative Mood

This article reviews recent evidence for the benefits of negative affect for thinking and behavior, consistent with evolutionary theories suggesting an adaptive function for all affective states. Numerous experiments demonstrate that negative affect can improve memory performance, reduce judgmental errors, improve motivation, and result in more effective interpersonal strategies.
