1 The Dribbblisation of Design - Inside Intercom

Only one of these weather apps is attempting to solve the real problem. There are divergent things happening in the product and interaction design community. On one hand, we have some amazing pieces of writing from the likes of Ryan Singer and Julie Zhuo, moving our craft forward. On the other hand, we have a growing number of people posting

Added by Kurt Madsen: “These are bite-sized posts about UX themes and topics. Great for getting into the field.

2 52 Weeks of UX

All designers say simplicity is important, but what does it really mean to make something simple? Most of the time we think it means less, that by removing stuff we achieve simplicity. We think by keeping content above the fold we're helping people focus, or by using bullets instead of paragraphs more people will read it, or by cutting text

Added by Kurt Madsen: “A list of suggestions and alternatives that will help when critiquing or analyzing your own (or others') design work. While the site focuses a lot on commercial websites, the concepts are applicable in many contexts.

4 GoodUI

A Good User Interface has high conversion rates and is easy to use. In other words, it's nice to both the business side as well as the people using it. Here is a running idea list which we discovered. And no, we are not done yet. We continue to learn about what makes user interfaces good by trying these ideas

Added by Kurt Madsen: “One of many great lesson plans (i.e., collections of articles) that can be found on on HackDesign. This one deals with more of the UI side of the UX spectrum.

5 UI Design with Purpose - Hack Design

Take a survey of your favorite and daily used apps on your mobile, tablet or laptop. Can you identify which of those apps excel in both aesthetics and usability? Have you installed some applications that aren't as successful in delivering top notch usability, but have opted to keep them purely because you're drawn to their visual style? Take note of

Added by Kurt Madsen: “Several links to case studies. Seeing how other people think and understanding how they come to the decisions they make are invaluable when designing.

6 What are some of the best case studies you've read? – Designer News

I'm sure we've all been told that case studies trump visuals when it comes to things like building a portfolio. If so, do you have any favorite case studies you'd recommend other folks look at? Why would you recommend it? Was it enjoyable to read...highly detailed, etc.

Added by Kurt Madsen: “Per Khoi Vinh (on subtraction.com): Amber Bravo of Google Design moderated a fascinating roundtable with Matias Duarte, Paul Colton (Pixate) and Max Wiesel (Relative Wave, makers of Form) on “How a new generation of prototyping tools at Google will help designers build better software.” Bravo has also posted this appendix of sorts to the conversation. The big takeaway here is that Google is gearing up to make a splash in the design tools space.

See Also: (More) thoughts on design toolsThis week on Google Design, we published a roundtable discussion with Matias Duarte and the founders of Pixate and RelativeWave, Paul Colton and Max Wiesel. To prepare for the interview, I turned to my design brethren on Medium (and beyond!) to learn more about their experiences working with some of the more popular prototyping

Added by Kurt Madsen: “Outside of making sure you designing responsively (i.e., for multiple screen sizes), each screen you design will have multiple states. In fact, this applies to more than just screens; it applies to buttons (hover, pressed/active, focused, default), input fields (empty, filled, error), text (highlighted v not), and even the page as a whole (print view, low bandwidth, etc.). In this article, Scott Hurff talks about those screen states as part of what he calls "The UI Stack."

8 How to fix a bad user interface - Scott Hurff

Hey! This is an excerpt from my book Designing Products People Love, which will be published by O'Reilly in December. Learn more about the book and the 20+ product designers from Facebook, Twitter, Slack, etc. who were interviewed about how they work. Have you ever experienced a user interface that feels lifeless? Have you created a UI that just seems

Added by Kurt Madsen: “Good overview of lots of web design techniques. Filled with links to other good articles.
